Do not swear – Matthew 5:33-37 [….Do not swear any oath…. If your words are yes, say yes; if they are no, say no; if you say more, it is because of that Evil one.] [Interpretation] Swearing itself is not a sin. If you do not keep a promised oath, a promise, or a false oath, this is a sin. There are countless records of swearing in the Bible. For example, God himself swore an oath. Christ When he was the high priest, he was also sworn by God. He also used oaths to test whether there was any crime in the law. Also like the great men in ancient times, they often used oaths to express covenants or promises to others. It can be seen that oaths are not originally Sin. But by the time of Jesus, believers were prohibited from swearing in view of the fact that the Jews broke their oaths and could not abide by the covenants in the law or perform other duties, turning the oaths into lies and causing them to deceive and evil thoughts. [Prayer] Dear Lord Jesus, You teach us to be honest and not deceive, and you also tell us not to swear by heaven or by the earth, because heaven is your seat and the earth is your footstool. Please let us be honest. In this way, we don’t have to rely on oaths to win people’s trust, and we don’t have to worry about being unable to keep our sworn promises and committing sins. We pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen!
